Starting from Chicago Union Station
Taking the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Fransisco was a bucket list item for me - one that I thankfully got to check off during summer 2024. The ~3 day Amtrak route dates back to 1949, then operated by the Western Pacific Railroad.
Chicago to Denver
The first day sees travel from Chicago across Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, and the eastern half of Colorado. Sun rises over Denver as you pull into yet another Union Station.
Denver to San Fransisco
Denver to San Fransisco sees the crossings of the Rocky Mountains, Utah salt flats, Nevada deserts, and Sierra Nevadas.
Arriving in San Fransisco
The 53 hour train journey ends in San Fransisco, where you can trade hard rail for trolleys!
